CHEMBALANCE - MAKING SENSE OF SUPPLEMENT CHOICES!
Blood Pressure

One of the tools you will need for the ChemBalance Assessment is a blood pressure monitor. Adults and children over the age of 12 will need a manual or electronic blood pressure monitor. A manual blood pressure monitor costs less, is generally considered more accurate and allows you to hear your own heart sounds. Electronic blood pressure monitors cost more and may not be as accurate. They do offer convenience and ease of use and are acceptable for this Assessment. ChemBalance recommends an 'Omron' brand 'Intellisense' series electronic blood pressure monitors (available for purchase from ChemBalance).

Be sure you use a blood pressure cuff that fits properly. Using the wrong size blood pressure cuff will give inaccurate results. Measure the circumference of the upper left arm (bicep) to determine the correct size cuff.

If your child is under the age of 12, you will need to obtain blood pressure readings on at least three days. Here are some options:

  • Purchase a child's size blood pressure monitor (available for purchase from ChemBalance) and take blood pressure readings yourself. Be sure the cuff is the right size for your child.
  • Make arrangements with a health professional to take a blood pressure reading - e.g. school nurse, local clinic, physician's office, a friend or relative who is a nurse or other health care professional. Find someone who will not charge an office call.
  • Check with the local fire fighters at your local fire station. They may be willing to take your child's blood pressure.
